The US government (and therefore the US tax payers) is subsidizing oil and coal powered energy production 6 times more than wind and solar energy. If subsidies were equal, then the two technologies would compete on a level playing field, and wind and solar would grow at a much faster rate. If this were to happen, we could convert to 100% renawable by 2013.

In 2011, the engineer and inventor Ray Kurtzweil suggested that, because of the law of accelerating returns, the US will meet 100% of its energy need with solar energy in 16 years. See interview.

Consider purchasing a hybrid car. They are powered partially by electricity which, unlike gasoline, can come from renewable sources like wind and solar panels.
