Introduction to Boplingo

I would like to present to you this online app called "Boplingo"

The purpose of Boplingo is to present the syntax of Bebop improvisation from a variety of angles. Single two bar phrases are presented in different contexts, so as to encourage the student to internalize melodic phrases and use them in a variety of situations and with instant recall.

The course is diveded into Sections. Each section comprises Units focusing on a particular song form, and will include the following:

Unit 1: Vocabulary

Unit 2: Constructing a full chorus

Unit 3: Matching phrases with chords

Unit 4: Finding new line options

Unit 5: The Bebop Tree: Altering the solo path

Unit 6: Understanding connections

Unit 7: Changing the start beat

The excercises will include linking phrases together, identifying phrases in relation to transcribed material, selecting different options for the continuation of a line, and understanding the potential ramifications of a solo.

The goal is to preserve the Bebop language through documented recordings and teachings of Dr. Barry Harris*.

Dr. Harris's improvisations contain the pure essence of Bebop as received directly from the creators like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. For this reason we have exclusively used Barry's solo material to create this course.

The Units are interactive. Practice them intensely on your instrument. They are designed to impress into memory specific elements of the bebop language, and to help connect them into complex lines.

Start with Chapter 1, Unit 1

*Editors note: If this language is not actively cultivated, there is a real risk of it becoming like Esperanto: a dead language. It is not enough to sprinkle Bebop into other improvisational languages like Post Bop, Modal, Gospel or Free Jazz, because the purity of the language itself is lost this way.
